[edit] Yes, withdrawUnless we are willing to put in 300,000+ more troops to completely occupy the state of Iraq, America's presence there does nothing good for the situation. Of course we need to withdraw. There are only bad results so far. The price of gas has gone up, the economy is in the toilet, American rights have been taken away, and it is giving Bush a bad reason to go to Iran now. The fact that Saddam is taken down is fine. The US has now caused escalation in a civil war there, and THEIR GOVERNMENT doesn't want us there either. Why stay around and screw up the country more? We shouldn't have even gone there in the first place. The "stay the course" argument is speculative at best. There is no historical evidence that supports the idea that chaos is the only possible result of our withdrawal. The only reason we went to Iraq was for their oil. War on terror? There was no Al-Qaeda in Iraq before we got there. Every single one of Bush/Cheney's reasons for taking us to war was a lie. Now, the public is being manipulated into believing that if we withdraw, we don't support the troops. This manipulation is being done for the sole purpose of insuring that we have an ally in Iraq for when we invade Iran. Edit this argument alone. |
[edit] No, Stay the CourseThe US cannot simply up and vanish from Iraq. It isn't feasible. Even a draw-down needs to be done in a controlled, organized fashion; you can't simply turn tail and run without creating total disaster. This is why Afghanistan became the way it is--because we left them out to dry. The war in Iraq has little to do with the American economy. The economy was mostly destroyed by subprime housing fiascos and the price of oil, driven up by other conflicts in the world, like Nigeria, Venezuela, and such. The Petraeus group of strategies is working, and conditions are improving now. Example: Falujah, which was a hotbed of opposition and insurgence just 2 years ago is now being rebuilt because the contractors feel safe enough to rebuild it. It's intolerable that the US government took so long to switch strategies or even develop a sensible endgame scenario, but that's in the past. It remains to be seen when the Iraqi goverment will stand up on its own. Given enough time, a stable Iraq will be an interesting partner in calming the middle east. The day the Americans decide to leave Iraq would be the day extremists and terrorists would declare it their victory after years of "fighting for islam". This "victory" would only help to fuel their terrorist activities in the Western world, not only the US. It would become an even greater security issue than it already is. The war in Iraq in not an apparent failure as people think it is but rather a continuous fight to suppress and inhibit terrorist activities from spreading around the region and around the world though they unfortunately produce casualties which we will find extremely hard to avoid. Thus, in conclusion, one must think not only of the current predicament and problems that are going on in the US but rather the dangers and repercussions society and people in Iraq will face in the future. A war cannot be fought only with victory, loss is apparent but the results will help change the future we live in. This is a “War against terrorism” and if we back down then we know who wins.
